Teaching
Since 2017 I have been covering informatics teaching needs of the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering at the University of the Aegean, co-teaching laboratory courses across the curriculum:
- Informatics (web fundamentals: HTML and CSS)
- Programming Technologies & Methodologies (introduction to programming in C#)
- Information Systems Design & Development (programming in Python)
- Mobile Application Design & Programming (Android apps in Java)
- Web Design and Programming (web applications in Node.js)
The links lead to each course’s lab notes, in Greek, on a platform I built to host them. On the same platform I am currently developing hands-on material on how large language models (LLMs) work, built around small open models running on local hardware.
Research
That classroom, together with my background and experience, is where my research comes from. I am a PhD candidate in the same department; my thesis, “Artificial Intelligence Tools in Programming and Robotics Education: Pedagogical Framework, Assessment and Instructional Design”, examines how AI tools are reshaping programming and robotics education. The challenge is twofold: students already use the tools, while the subject itself, the skills that matter in practice, is changing fast. The question the thesis pursues is how to integrate them on sound pedagogical grounds: what framework guides the integration, how students are assessed when the tools are part of the learning process, and how instruction is designed so that they serve learning rather than undermine it.
Artificial intelligence
Software development itself is meanwhile going through a radical transformation, unfolding as we speak, and no one yet knows where it will settle. Being a developer and an educator myself, I follow it closely: this shift will inevitably reshape education too, university education perhaps first of all. These questions were at the core of my decision to turn systematically to doctoral research.
Artificial intelligence runs through both my research and several of the projects, and I believe it needs balance: modern AI tools genuinely raise productivity, but the widely repeated claim that they replace traditional techniques, and above all knowledge, is wrong. Supervising them takes both the background knowledge and the time and care to apply it; without those, unpleasant surprises are inevitable, in security above all, but also in the design and architecture of systems and applications.
SmartMove
I am a founding member of SmartMove, the maritime robotics and intelligent transportation systems lab, whose work revolves around autonomous surface vessels, from cooperative autonomy and digital twins to maritime informatics. My own involvement runs across the lab’s range: vessel assembly, wiring and sea trials, simulation, the EU-funded research projects, and the lab’s website. Every summer the lab also runs an international summer school on maritime informatics and robotics in Syros, where I am part of the organizing team and teach the software labs.
Projects
Alongside the teaching I build and maintain software: websites, web platforms, and tools, some for university departments and courses, some for the research lab I am a member of, and some as personal projects, mostly for people and communities around me.
